Osteopathy - indications

Indications for osteopathy

Osteopathic medicine serves as a therapy for a variety of acute and chronic complaints or functional limitations and can also be used preventively. The goal of the treatment is to identify connections and causes, resolve blockages, and alleviate pain. The body’s self-healing powers are to be activated. Whether osteopathy is used as the sole treatment or in conjunction with medical treatment depends on the individual symptoms.

Musculoskeletal indications

This refers to pain or diseases of the musculoskeletal system. It can be treated for both acute injuries, such as those that occur during sports, and recurring or chronic complaints.

This includes:

  • Back pain and lumbago
  • Tension and muscle pain
  • Herniated disc
  • Sciatica
  • scoliosis
  • blockages of the spine or the ISG
  • Joint pain
  • Problems of tendons (e.g., tennis elbow)
  • frozen shoulder
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders
  • jaw pain and grinding

Complaints related to the nervous system

The causes of nerve problems are often found in the musculoskeletal system, such as blockages, misalignments, or muscle tension. Through its holistic approach, osteopathy also offers a treatment option in this area:

  • Headaches
  • Migraine
  • Tinnitus
  • Numbness
  • Sleep Disorders

Problems with organs

Adhesions and scarring cause limited mobility and thus limit the function of organs. This area also takes into account laboratory analyses and imaging procedures.

Osteopathic techniques are used for the following issues, among others:

  • Digestive complaints,
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • Heartburn
  • Breathing difficulties
  • After inflammation such as kidney pelvis and bladder infections, among others
  • Urin incontinence
  • After any abdominal or thoracic surgery
  • Menstrual
  • discomfort
  • Endometriosis

Treatment process

Osteopathic treatment is not limited to treating individual symptoms or a disease, but rather views the person as a whole. In an osteopathic treatment, pain and discomfort are reduced in the long term by resolving restrictions and osteopathic dysfunctions.

The first treatment also begins here with a detailed anamnesis interview.
Information about the current situation, chronic illnesses, general health, previous illnesses, surgeries, and medication intake are inquired. Patients can ask questions and express their wishes.

This will take a bit more time in the first treatment. However, an overview of a person’s individual overall picture is an important basis for further treatment.

Following this, I perform a full-body examination, during which I form an initial impression of the body, as well as its movements and functions. The goal is to identify stress patterns and compensations. The examination is very important because complaints can be transferred to other parts of the body through complex tension patterns. Depending on the complaints and wishes, a movement and/or gait analysis is just as much a part of it as orthopedic tests.

Based on this, a differential diagnosis is made and it is determined whether osteopathic treatment is indicated or if it is a contraindication for osteopathic treatment.

Afterwards, the treatment strategy is created and further steps are discussed before the treatment.

The osteopathic treatment is performed exclusively with the hands. By trained, precise palpation of tensions and changes, conclusions can be drawn about the condition and health of the tissue.

The examination and treatment take place in underwear. If this is uncomfortable, please bring loose clothing.

about me

For more than 15 years, I have been working with great fun, enthusiasm, and passion in the physical therapy field.

The complexity of anatomy, physiology, and the interrelationships of the body fascinate me greatly, which is why I strive to continually expand my medical knowledge and further train my hands through continuing education.

During my studies and various further training courses at home and abroad, I have learned different approaches to osteopathy, which have significantly expanded my osteopathic horizon.

what is important to me

Consideration of the patient's wishes

The human body is fascinating, with many different structures and functions that are closely interconnected. The emotional situation and personal experiences also play a significant role, as they have a strong impact on the body. Therefore, I design the treatment to be completely individual to best support you in your entirety.

Involving patients

During treatment, it is important to me to involve the patients. For a sense of one’s own body, understanding, and a transparent overview of relationships enable solutions and an individual approach to abnormalities or pain. I’m happy to take the time to explain the relationships between anatomy and physiology in more detail.

Consensus and awareness in my work

Every person has had different experiences with themselves and their own body and knows themselves best. In my examinations and treatments, I find it important to have a consensual approach, in which the boundaries of my patients are respected and decisions about treatment are made together.

I am aware that people can be affected by various forms of discrimination and may have had negative experiences in the healthcare system. I try to be sensitive to this. If there are any topics or wishes, I am always available to discuss them.

Interdisciplinary work

I also care a lot about interdisciplinary work. I am happy to facilitate a joint exchange or work with treating physicians, midwives, physical therapists, or occupational therapists at the request of the patient.
